Ultrasound guided sclerotherapy is similar to Conventional Sclerotherapy. The only difference is that the doctor uses ultrasound technology to see troublesome veins beneath the skin. Using the ultrasound image as a guide, the doctor can place sclerosing foam directly into the abnormal vein. Blood flow in the vein is interrupted immediately and redirected to healthy veins. Walls of the treated vein swell, the vein closes, and over weeks or months becomes an imperceptible thread beneath the skin.This treatment is rapid, depending on the number of abnormal veins, and is practically painless.

How long does the procedure take?
Treatment with Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy may take from 15 to 60 minutes depending on the number and complexity of the varicose veins.
What is the recovery?
Elastic compression bandages and then compression hose will be worn for 48-72 hours to keep the treated vein closed. Patients are asked to limit physical activity to a vigorous walk several times each day.
What are the risks with this procedure?
Common side effects include local discoloration (due to old blood caught in the closed vein). This discoloration disappears as the diseased vein shrinks to a thread.
